Epiphany

Poetry by Melissa Mercado Kama

Rubies

I found rubies in the broken sand.

They didn’t sparkle, nor shine.

They dripped, stinging my arm.

Worthless liquid stones of nothing.

They were worth much once,

I once thought long ago.

Long were thoughts encumbered.

Released from the skies.

It thundered down, pouring up

Up the heavens, the crimsons dropped.

For always, I will remember

What muddy tears were worth.

Throw them up the kingdom’s floor

Break through the earth’s ceiling

So the angels know, the rubies

They sparkle but shine no more.
